Green Wall & Green Roof Glossary of Terms
Capillary action: the attraction of water molecules to soil particles. Capillary action is responsible for moving water from wet areas of the soil to dry areas.
Carbon footprint: the total set of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused directly and indirectly by an individual, organization, event or product.
Green Living Wall: a complete system for growing plants in a vertical or sloped plane.
Green Roof: a complete system devised to allow you to grow plants on the roof of your house or building without incurring any leaks or damage to the roof membrane that protects the building envelope.
Green Roof Soil Media: a specially engineered soil less media that is lightweight, drains easily, and can withstand the harsh conditions of a roof top environment without compacting or cracking.
LEED: acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. A system developed by the US Green Building Council to categorise the level of environmentally sustainable construction in sustainable buildings.
Pressure compensating emmiter: emitters for drip irrigation systems which are manufactured so that the discharge from each emitter is uniform at varying operating pressures.
Stormwater Management: a system devised to mitigate and/or clean stormwater that does not soak into the ground. Stormwater is a concern when it becomes surface runoff which either flows directly into surface waterways or is channeled into storm sewers and then discharged to surrounding waterways, polluting them or overwhelming their capacities to take the water away.
USGBC: United States Green Building Council; a non-profit trade organization that promotes sustainability in how buildings are designed, built and operated.
Urban Heat Island Effect: A measured phenomenon wherein a metropolitan area is significantly warmer than its surrounding rural areas.
Vertical Garden: a complete system for growing plants in a vertical or sloped plane.
VOCs: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are organic chemical compounds that evaporate or vaporize readily under normal conditions which may also be harmful or toxic.
